  1. The sooner the better since set-in stains are harder to remove.  Never wash or iron stained fabrics prior to removing stains.  Heat set stains.  Rinse thoroughly after treating a stain.  Try to remove not only all of the stain but the stain remover as well before machine washing or drying the fabric.
2. When storing clothes avoid attics because of the heat and store in plastic tubs.
  1. Inks have an oily component.  Hair spray can sometimes work.  Rubbing alcohol can then be used as a solvent to remove the oils.  SHOUT also works on ink.
Small star. Food Stains
  1. Color additives in food stains can either be water or oil soluble, but most likely oil.  For the oil stains try to remove with an oil, like WD-40 followed by a solvent like rubbing alcohol.

  1. Use nail polish remover for scuffs on shoes.
2. For a quick shine use furniture polish on regular shoes.
3. Use petroleum jelly to shine patent leather shoes - buff with soft cloth.
4. BABY WIPES - Wipe over shoes to clean and polish.
(If container of wipes become too dry, mix together 1/2 c. water and 1 T. baby oil and pour into container.  Seal the container and turn over several times, letting it sit a few minutes after each turn.)
Crayons on fabric: Grease removes grease.  Put pad of paper under spot and spray the spot with WD-40.  Leave on stain approximately 15 min.  Pour undiluted liquid dish soap on the area and work with thumb.  Launder as usual.
Crayons on walls: Spray WD-40 on the wall.  Using circular motion and sponge, rub spot.  Use toothbrush on textured wall.  Use undiluted dish soap and warm water to remove residue.
Markers on wood: Work petroleum jelly into the stain using circular motion.  May require several applications.  White non-gel toothpaste can also be used.  Rinse and buff with soft cloth.
Markers on carpet: Pour rubbing alcohol on the stain.  Rub gently and blot.  Flush the area with club soda.  The carbonation bubbles up the stain and the salts deep it from staining.  Several applications may be necessary.  If any residue that remains use a carpet spotter to clean.
Marker on clothes: Place stained area in a dish of rubbing alcohol and let it soak for approximately 15 minutes.  Occasionally squeeze the liquid through the fabric but never rub.  May require several soakings.  Launder as usual.
Finger paint: Place paper towels under stain.  Saturate with either acetone or non-acetone nail polish remover.  The stain will begin to bleed so blot move towels around to keep area under stain clean.  To keep clean up easier with using finger paints ad a little liquid dish soap to each container.

Small star. Fabric Softener Stains
  1. Blue spots - Caused from liquid fabric softeners.  Wet clothes and rub with dishwashing liquid.  Rewash.
2. Grease marks- Caused by dryer-sheets.  Rub with wet bar of soap such as Dove or Ivory.  Rewash.
MAKE YOUR OWN FABRIC SOFTENER SHEETS: Mist a washcloth with 1 part liquid fabric softener and 2 parts water.  Add to dryer.  Re-mist per load.
LIQUID FABRIC SOFTENER: Fill dispenser with 1/4 C. white vinegar to soften laundry without leaving odors.
FOR HARD WATER: 1/2 lb. washing soda, 1/4 lb. borax, one gallon warm water.  Mix in one gallon container.  Washing soda softens hard water.  Store in the labeled container and add 1 C. along with laundry detergent to your machine with every load of laundry.  You may find you won't need as much softener.  This is a natural product and won't hurt skin.

Small star. Muddy Stains Small star. Will Colors Run?
  1. Muddy stains are hard to remove if you don't act fast.  Table salt can help.  It will combine with the salts in the soil and pull them away from the fibers.  Commercial soil and stain removers can also break up the soil and help to remove the organic materials.   Put a drop of water on an inconspicuous spot and blot with a white cotton ball.  If colors transfer to the cotton ball wash separately.
